Let's go back in time, to a time when you were 5 years old and free from all of the cares of the world. You were free to dream, free to play, free to be anyone you wanted because no expectations had yet been placed on you, that you were aware of. Who did you want to be? What did you see for yourself? You probably just loved to be happy and free!
As we continue on through life we pick up stories. The stories of who we are "supposed" to be and the expectations of what others believe we "should" be. We become people pleasers and start to lose our childhood sense of wonder and happiness. We get caught up in the incessant caring of what others think of us. We let what they think dictate who we become, what we wear, what we eat, our careers, how we raise our family. Is this how it's supposed to be? We are taught that the answer is YES.
How many women do you know who are pursuing their dreams? A more easily answered question is probably how many women are NOT following their dreams because of expectations that were placed on them by an outside source? Often this source thinks they have our best interest at heart and they are only going on their own experience so we can't really blame them for trying. You only know what you know until you choose to learn more. The truth is, if we don't start making the changes need in our own lives we are going to put more of the same on our children. We are going to put our expectations on them, we are going to become the voice in their heads that tells them what they are dreaming of is not practical. We are going to keep the cycle of protection in the name of safety going.
